What is hyaluronic acid and what effect does it have on the skin?
To achieve smooth and firm skin, natural structural components of the skin are often used in creams and serums. They are considered true moisture providers – not only for the skin but also for the hair. The result is visibly smooth and firm skin. Learn why they are beneficial in every skin and hair care routine:

1. What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found throughout our entire body – more than half of it in our skin. It is a (naturally occurring) sugar-like biopolymer composed of alternating units of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Hyaluronic acid is an essential component of the vitreous body of the eye (Hyaluron = Greek for “vitreous body”) and the connective tissue of the skin. It acts as a lubricant for joints and improves their function.
In the skin, hyaluronic acid supports collagen fibers and structural proteins and binds water. The active ingredient can bind via hydrogen bonds to the keratin molecules of the outermost skin layer. The result is a visible tightening effect and an immediate reduction of fine lines. Hyaluronic acid can also store 1000 times its own weight in moisture, effectively counteracting wrinkles and preventing moisture loss.
2. How is it used in cosmetics?
It is also referred to as the sodium salt in cosmetics (INCI: Sodium Hyaluronate). Due to its strong anti-wrinkle and moisturizing effects, it is used in its biotechnologically produced form in cosmetics and aesthetic dermatology.
Thanks to its high water-binding capacity, it provides the skin with intensive moisture and visibly plumps it up. It forms a film on the skin surface that tightens as it evaporates and immediately softens small wrinkles.
They come in different chain lengths, expressed in molecular weight (unit: Dalton or g/mol). The size determines whether they act superficially (long-chain), penetrate deeply into the skin (short-chain), release their moisturizing effect gradually (encapsulated), or act on the skin as long as possible (cross-linked). Depending on the care goal and skin type, optimal care results can be achieved with these variants.
- The long-chain/large molecule (molecular weight 1.5–2.0 MDa (megadalton)) acts on the skin surface. It binds via hydrogen bonds to the keratin molecules of the stratum corneum and unfolds a visibly tightening effect after evaporation. Fine lines and wrinkles are visually filled.
- Short-chain / low molecular weight (molecular weight 0.15–0.35 MDa (megadalton)) can penetrate into the deep epidermal layers of the skin and exert its effect in the deep connective tissue. Moisture is stored and provides an additional plumping effect from within.
- Thanks to its composition, it is liposomally encapsulated and can thus penetrate the stratum corneum. This delivery system enables even better penetration into the deeper layers of the epidermis and gradual release. As a moisturizer, hyaluronic acid also has a swelling effect on the intercellular tissue.
- Cross-linked hyaluronic acid binds water more strongly and is the most effective. It enables long-term effects because the body breaks it down less easily. Cross-linked hyaluronic acid provides visibly plumper skin and a youthful fresh complexion with each application.
3. Our patented active ingredient complex is Hyaluron⁵
Due to its high efficiency, we have specially developed and patented a complex. An innovative combination of 5 different long and short chains!
The WELLMAXX Hyaluron⁵ care is characterized especially by an innovative combination of various long- and short-chain hyaluronic acids. This unique technology allows deeper penetration into the skin than usual. It intensely supplies the skin with moisture and supports better moisture retention.
Enjoy our immediate effect
The first positive effects of the WELLMAXX Hyaluron⁵ filler are visible immediately after applying the care cream. The contained hyaluronic acid makes the skin appear smoother and younger. Superficial fine lines are visibly softened as the skin layers are intensively supplied with the valuable water magnet. Our creams form a protective shield over your skin and protect it from environmental influences. The delicate, pleasantly scented protective film prevents the skin from drying out without restricting its breathability. Additionally, our cosmetics activate the skin's own production, which belongs to the tasks of the deeper skin layers.
This active ingredient is intensively contained in the products of the WELLMAXX Hyaluron⁵ care line.
4. How does it work against wrinkles and skin aging?
Moisture is the basis for many important skin processes. The more hydrated the skin is, the more effectively the active ingredient unfolds its anti-wrinkle effect.
Hyaluronic acid is connected to the skin's keratin via hydrogen bonds. When evaporating, a slight tightening effect occurs that counteracts skin aging and wrinkle formation. This fills the wrinkle base and small wrinkles seem to disappear.
Of course, hyaluronic acid also rejuvenates the skin in the short term, as its swelling effect makes the skin look younger. However, real “anti-aging” can only be achieved in the right combination. That is why our patented hyaluronic acid complex is so effective.
5. Does a deficiency occur with increasing age?
Every human body produces hyaluronic acid daily, which supports various bodily functions, including skin moisture. From the age of 25, hyaluronic acid production decreases. To maintain the skin's firming properties, it needs a constant supply. Therefore, it is especially important that the skin receives the missing hyaluronic acid through hyaluronic acid creams.
The older your skin is, the more additional hyaluronic acid it needs.
6. Why is it a useful ingredient for dry, moisture-deficient, and mature skin?
The drier the skin, the more moisture it needs. Since it can be optimally supplied from the outside, the skin's moisture reserves are constantly replenished. Thanks to its water-binding effect, the active ingredient gives the skin elasticity and firmness. The resulting long-lasting moisture content protects the skin from drying out again and makes it more resilient.
For the skin to store moisture for a long time, the care cream must also contain sufficient lipids, i.e., fats, oils, or plant butters. For dry skin, ampoules, serums, and the appropriate rich creams can be combined.
7. How does it help with eye wrinkles?
The skin around the eyes is particularly sensitive and requires special care. It provides intensive moisture and leaves the eye area smooth and refreshed.
The delicate skin of the eye area becomes thinner with age and can therefore store less moisture. It provides the eye area with intensive moisture and makes individual areas of the entire eye area look smooth and fresh again. The active ingredient visibly fills in dryness wrinkles, prevents rapid drying out, and counteracts signs of fatigue. The result is a visibly fresher and more awake eye area.
