Erythrulose is a gently acting self-tanning ingredient that belongs to the carbohydrate compounds which react with the proteins in the outermost skin layer. After application it slowly reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum, producing a natural brownish pigmentation that lightly tones the skin. This process is called the Maillard reaction.

In sun-care cosmetics, erythulose supports the immediate effect and ensures that the skin acquires a pleasant, lightly tinted base before or during sun exposure. In combination with tanning boosters it creates an optimized, intense yet very natural tanning result that harmoniously accompanies tanning in the solarium.
